Six third-year watchmaking apprentices from the Vocational Training Centre in Glashütte started a two-week work placement on 14 February at the A. Lange & Söhne Akademie and in the production units of the traditional Saxon manufactory. The demand for skilled personnel continues to grow and the watchmaking profession offers good prospects for the future.
As part of a cooperation with the local Vocational Training Centre, Lange is now offering apprentices on the watchmaking course the opportunity of long-term involvement with the company. After an initial compulsory work placement they were all keen to deepen their practical experience at Lange and the company was delighted to meet their requests. The apprentices are now able to put their skills to the test under the tuition of master watchmaker Oliver Matzdorf. They have had to assemble a complete Lange movement – from preparatory activities, which included pressing the jewels into a movement plate, through to final assembly. This has given the future watchmakers in-depth insight into the skills required for this traditional and demanding craft. Sabrina Krause from Freital near Dresden values the elective work placement as an informative and useful experience, as well as good preparation for her upcoming examination, and is happy to undertake the daily commute.
At the beginning of the second week, Marion Vogler, Head of the Vocational Training Centre, and company founder Walter Lange paid a visit to the watchmaking apprentices. Both see the benefit of this cooperation for all those involved. At the end of their placement, the apprentices receive an appraisal from Oliver Matzdorf, who himself completed the watchmaking course at the Vocational Training Centre in 2005 before joining Lange. According to Matzdorf, “The hard work of the participants is commendable. I am impressed by their aptitude and learning ability and have no worries about their prospects in the industry.”
